It is believed that the Byzantine inspired designs of Sven Estridsen's early coinage are inspired by the coins in the vast treasure that his contemporary Harald Hardrada brought back to Scandinavia with from the Byzantine empire. Harald, an initial supporter of Svend in his struggle to seize the Danish throne, had been a commander in the Varangian Guard of the Byzantine emperor and had amassed a huge treasure in his service .
