mint and moneyers name, good style. $1195
It has been suggested that
this issue was struck during Cnut's lifetime, as it is also appears in his
name and belongs to the period after Cnut's military expeditions in Norway
and Sweden, when Harthacnut was raised to the rank of joint king in Denmark.
The latter half of Cnut's reign is characterized by an abandonment of coin
designs based upon English prototypes and the adoption of designs that draw
on ideas from indigenous Danish culture. The coiled serpent on the obverse
is perhaps identifiable with the Jörmungandr (World Serpent) from
pre-Christian Norse mythology that encircles the earth.
